Adopt A Clinic in Ghana
A very important need in the healthcare delivery in Ghana is the management of patients' medical records. Lots of patients die from medical errors such as administering the wrong medications, adverse drug interactions, misdiagnoses of diseases, lack of medication reconciliations, and the providers' inability to reference past medical histories of the patients for differential diagnosis and treatments.
Anyone who has embarked on a medical mission(s) in Ghana has witnessed some of the above problems. MWB's plan is to install Electronic Medical Records (EMR) on small computer networks (LANs) in clinics in the Ghana to enhance patients' medical records management and prospects. This project is called "Adopt A Clinic" and the main items needed for each adopted clinic are:
- 4 desktop computers or laptops
- 4 monitors (LCDs preferred due to size and weight)
- 1 Multi-port Switch or patch panel.
- 1 external network hard drive
- Electronic Medical Record software
- Power strips and surge protectors
- Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) units
Note: Dr. Patrick Crisp, a medical practitioner and computer programmer in Australia, has offered his
GP Desk EMR to MWB at discount prices for installations in developing countries. Another Australian, Arthur Winarczyk, has offered his
5GL-Doctor database, a comprehensive medical diagnosis decision support system, to be installed for the clinics at discount prices too. The two programs can help save many lives if you can help purchase or donate the computer and network products listed above for a small network setup (LAN) at each clinic you want to adopt in a developing country.
Not only will you help the clinics organize their patients' medical records in electronic formats for easy access for references and treatments but you will help the healthcare providers get easy and quick access to medical diagnosis decision support systems with the click of a mouse.
